Our Vision for Mathematics

Our vision is to ensure that children have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Mathematical concepts and develop a love of Maths through our mastery curriculum. Our intent is that all children have the opportunity to have a sound understanding of Mathematics and become life-long mathematicians, problem-solvers and deep thinkers.

Our aims of the Maths curriculum

At Bourne Alliance, we follow the Maths Mastery curriculum which aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Become fluent    in the fundamentals of mathematics, including varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• Reason mathematically    by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and develop an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
• Can   solve problems    by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Through the planning and teaching of Mathematics, for which we use the scheme PowerMaths, we achieve these aims by…

• Supporting our children with understanding and remembering mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures appropriate for their starting points. This ensures that our children are ready for the next stage, whether that is readiness for the next lesson, the next unit of work, year group or key stage.
• Ensuring our curriculum is plans carefully sequenced knowledge, concepts and procedures to build mathematical knowledge and skills systematically and, over time, drawing connections across different ways of looking at mathematical ideas
• Identifying opportunities within the curriculum when mathematical reasoning and problem solving will allow pupils to make useful connections between mathematical ideas and anticipate practical problems they are likely to encounter in adult life.
• Giving our children the opportunity to rapidly and accurately recall number facts through revisiting mathematical concepts each week, term and year
• Finding opportunities for our children to gain enjoyment through a growing self-confidence in their mathematical abilities

How can you help your child with Maths?

• Point out the different shapes to be found around your home.
• Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of anything you buy.
• Let your child handle money and work out how much things cost.
• Find numbers in your local environment. Can they add/multiply/subtract/divide them?
• Look together for numbers on street signs and number plates.
• Look at house numbers and talk about odd and even.
• Ask older children to work out the best special offer when out shopping.
• Look at clocks and tell the time. Talk about timings on TV guides or when you are planning a journey.
• Learn how to recall times tables quickly.
• Practice number recognition, numbers bonds to 10, 20 and 100
•  Practice times tables including their related division facts e.g. 2 x 3 = 6    6 ÷ 2 = 3
• Get your child to help you with cooking by measuring out ingredients and working out timings and temperatures.
• Buy puzzle books for your child
